New Rochelle High School senior Michael Lawson, who became a two-time state champion this year, announced his intention to head to Hawaii following graduation, where he will take to the pool at the University of Hawaii.

An all-American, Lawson has competed in the New York State High School Swimming Championships for four years in a row as part of the New Rochelle-Bronxville joint swim team, claiming his latest championship earlier this year.

Lawson has made a name for himself in the pool, making his mark as part of the 400-meter freestyle relay team that won the New York State Championship last year, breaking the New Rochelle High School record in the event. It was also one of the 100 fastest relays in the country.

This year, Lawson followed up his record-breaking performance by claiming the Section 1 championship in the 50-meter freestyle and breaking the New Rochelle record in the event. He and his teammates also won back-to-back state titles in the relay, breaking the state record along the way.

"I have worked hard here over the years and have come to appreciate the amazing programs here and the people,” Lawson said. “All of my accomplishments would never have happened if not for my coaches, the school and the community that is New Rochelle. I especially appreciate my teammates who I am very happy for and am beyond lucky to have met and trained with to where we could become champions."
